Mark is walking us through the last days of Jesus's ministry before he enters Jerusalem and ultimately is crucified. He may be a bit cranky. After telling the disciples he will be killed, they do not understand but are afraid to ask.
It plays out again when they arrive at Capernaum and he asks what they were arguing about on the way.
But they were silent.
They'd been arguing about who was the greatest. It probably started with a discussion about succession. "Well, what if he dies. Who takes over?" Because we disciples always take the high road--and we want the highest seat.
They were silent.
Jesus knew what they had been talking about. We call them parking lot conversations at the church. That's where we tend to decide, in conversation with our very good friends and people who think like us, what should be done.
In meetings, in discernment groups, and sometimes, before God, we are silent.
Jesus doesn't tell them to stop talking. He tell them that whoever wants to be first must be the servant of all.
And we are silent.
