Faithful Pathways: Risk

We asked people in worship what stopped them from sharing their experiences of God's work in their lives with others. Overwhelmingly, the answer was so that people didn't think they were weird or crazy or pushy.

Jesus returns to his hometown in this episode in Mark...teaches in the synagogue. Those who heard him were "astounded." But offended. Because, after all, this was the carpenter's son. He wasn't supposed to teach in the synagogue...he was supposed to do some carpenter thing.

But Jesus went. He tried. He failed. Nowhere do we see him wishing he didn't have to go back to his hometown. Nowhere do we see him plotting to go around it to the next town. He just goes and fails completely.

Is there a lesson in there? Should we be less concerned about what people think?

Duh.

But, seriously, I think we have to risk more if we are trying to walk that faithful pathway. I don't see it any other way in the gospel text.
