Faithful Pathways: Try Again...

Love this story in Mark. Remember, twice the disciples have claimed not to have enough bread. Twice Jesus has fed thousands. Jesus has another spat with the Pharisees, he "leaves them," gets in the boat again, and went across to the other side.

"Now the disciples had forgotten to bring any bread." What?! Really? Jesus, still probably steaming from the Pharisees, just pulls a classic parenting move...he teaches a lesson from a different time and place to "kids" who are in the present. "Watch out--beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."

"It's because we have no bread."

No...it's because...well is it even worth the breath to say it again? Jesus does...recounts the whole story...reminds them of the food and the miracles. "Do you not yet understand?"

Guarantee he wasn't patiently explaining with that last comment.

They came to Bethsaida...and Jesus healed a blind man. It took two tries. Try one: "Can you see anything?"

"I can see people, but they look like trees walking."

(Was Jesus saying "dumb as sticks?")

Try two: He sees everything clearly. Gets sent home...not to the village. You get the feeling that Jesus just might be tired of the human condition.

I don't know how frustrating we must be, even now. But I do know that second chances are offered.

Try again.
